• Personal Background

    I am a long-time resident who wears two tartans, Maxwell and McKenzie, all known as farmers, builders, tradesmen, small business owners, manufacturers, teachers, nurses, doctors and accountants.

    I have been married for forty years to my wife Linda, residing in our own home in Clarksburg. Our daughter McKenzie, along with her partner Tony and our two year old grandson live in and teach in Grey Highlands.

    I have always been involved in growing apples, today only as a hobby. Until recently, I also worked within the construction industry, working for local small developers in the eighties, and owned and operated my own small landscaping company.

    Over the years I've been a Kinsmen, a Lions Club member, helped create the Beaver River Watershed Initiative, a Blue Mountain Historical Society member and to a lesser degree, involved with the Blue Mountain Curling Center.

    I am proud of and believe in the great community works of our Legion, Marsh Street Center, Beaver Valley Athletic Association, Blue Mountain Watershed Trust, Tree trust, Blue Ridge Sportsman's Club, CANN, the Escarpment Corridor Alliance, the individuals and organizations within the agricultural community, the Fall Fair board, the BVO, churches and everyone either as a individual or as a group, that help and support our community.

    Over the years I have played sports, but I do have a passion for fishing, camping and canoeing especially in the Algonquin Park backcountry and on the French River. I have travelled quite a bit domestically and internationally, always asking questions and learning. Some journeys that stand out are Greenland, the Panama Canal and South Africa.

    Political Background

    My political experience, begins with serving on Thornbury council prior to amalgamation. Served on committees of council and engaged the provincial government on how to create a village association in the absence of a BIA and today I'm a sitting councillor and a director with the Grey Sauble Conservation Authority.

    For the council term 2022-2026 I was a elected as a councillor and served on these committees.

  • Re-elect Alex Maxwell, a long-time resident, dedicated to our community.

    The Residents and the Community must come first

    I have advocated for this by:

    • Pushing for and encouraging greater public participation, working with individuals and groups on how to approach council and the overall system.
    • Working over the years at the council table and behind the scenes to get answers on troubling community matters
    • I have seconded motions when others shied away, in particular questioning large cost overruns
    • Many times taking the lead and questioning whether something isin the taxpayers and residents best interest
    • I have served several notices of motion ranging from connectivity of green space, core services, traffic speeds and overall public safety, the national anthem, naming rights and sponsorships
    • Taking time to look at citizens concerns face to face and called them back
    • Working with other municipal representatives and conservation staff on the restructuring process of Grey Sauble Conservation Authority and the merger with others to become the Lake Huron Regional Conservation Agency - a new conservation area, equivalent in size to Switzerland
    • As a council, we worked together along with staff to meet compliance with a number of new provincial directives
    • I have always tried to bring new ideas and methods of doing things that save time and money, for example water filled barriers instead of concrete jersey barriers
    • I have pushed back against the Grey County Road Transfers, along with some other councillors
    • More recently, speaking up and supporting other councillors through various delegations to provincial ministries
    • I participated strongly, advocating for the public in the Official plan, the Strategic Plan, the Corporate review and other initiatives
    • Working collaboratively with the TBM, GSCA and community groups to advance connectivity of green space and the advancement of wildlife corridors

    Any and all priorities, moving forward, will be to save residents dollars, stimulate the local economy,

    while working in the overall best interests of the community and the residents.

  • How to save:

    • Identify core and non-core services. needs vs. wants
    • Develop and initiate a strong maintenance programs across all departments to extend the life of our assets
    • Use the KPMG audit report along with Value for Engineering report as valuable tools for future infrastructure projects
    • Use the strategic plan
    • Use the corporate review and push for the the necessary changes required to ensure that our taxpayers and residents are receiving value for dollars spent
    • Take proactive steps and measures to deal with flooding and traffic congestion
    • We must explore the use of municipal service corporations, contracting out, tighter oversight on projects and sharing services with other municipalities and Grey County.

    Budgets must:

    • Stimulate the local economy
    • Diversify our tax base to be to less reliant on residential taxation
    • Implement a structural strategy that bridges the shoulder season gaps
    • Promote and encourage a mix of housing, ranging from seniors housing to workforce and multi generational housing
    • Promote light manufacturing tied to our two primary industries of tourism and agriculture
    • Invest in social infrastructure, child care and public transit will help drive economic growth, while helping those dealing with high housing costs
    • Gradually shift the town away from a playground for visitors and moving towards a self-sustaining community that builds growth locally.
    • Reduce property taxes when possible, allowing for greater re-investment in the local economy
